The state of Windows Media Player (WMP)

What has happened to Microsoft's consumer lineup of software? I believe it's gone down the drain and it's quality is not getting better. I'd love to personally ask Bill Gates why there was such a big lawsuit in Europe over Windows Media Player being bundled with Windows XP.
